Cake Decorating

Ever since summer has started I have tried to pursue a number of new endeavors in hopes that I will find a new hobby. IMG_1178 Usually I fear trying new things because I hate not being instantly good at things, but I put my fear aside for the summer and began experimenting. I love watching the show Ace of Cakes (on The Food Network) and I began thinking, “that looks easy, I could totally do that.” Well…..it’s definitely NOT EASY, incredibly time consuming, and very hard for someone who has very little patience for trying new things.

My first endeavor was a polka dot cake for my niece Mckenna’s birthday party (The picture was taken before I tied a pink ribbon around it). IMG_4876This was my first time working with fondant and I rolled it in granulated sugar. Had I read the back of the box instead of just doing what I thought I IMG_5832should do I would have realized that it actually said POWDERED sugar (my family has never been really into reading instructions). Nevertheless it turned out pretty well for my first attempt.

The problem with my family is that when you tell them you can do something you are all of the sudden the resident ___________. IMG_5261For example, I learned to play the piano, so now I am the resident pianist, I am the only person without kids and they know I love kids so I am the resident babysitter, when I told them I was going to start making cakes, I became the resident cake maker! I don’t mind it though because it has given me a lot of practice with such a big family and lots of birthdays.

I would hardly call myself an expert…….more of an apprentice/novice level. But I have fun making them, and once I figured out that you are supposed to use powdered sugar, it made a WORLD of difference in my mood while I make cakes! :) So Tim is VERY grateful for that discovery. :)

Tank Wars

July 3rd, 2009 marked the 4th anniversary of Tank Wars. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this rousing new sport, each contestant modifies ordinary fireworkIMG_5628 tanks into mammoth fireballs build to incinerate their opponent. The Thiess family visited from Kentucky to make their debut at Tank Wars with eager anticipation to blow crap up. Tank Wars consists of 3 different competitions, races, battles, and a beauty contest worth a few extra points.

This year went a lot smoother than previous years, with rule bickering kept to a minimum. On the first day we had the races, each contestant entered IMG_55893 speed tanks, with points earned for winning and going certain distances. Megan and I had one of our tanks go the second IMG_5562 farthest, robbed by the Lazarte’s Monsters Inc. car. The first day ended with Scott and Christy winning the overall race contest, with the Lazartes and Megan and I in close second and third.

I got a few extra points on the beauty contest for my Santa’s Slay creation IMG_5709 which tied me for first place going into the battle competition, but my destruction tanks flopped. After a lot of excitement and fire we tallied up the votes and retired for next year. Maybe if Megan and I start early this year we can have something to show for all of our smack talk.

A Mexican Moment

After realizing that I was in the drive through of a Del Taco with a chihuahua on my lap, I didn’t think I could get any more Mexican.

Then this song came on the Radio…

I just need 9 people spilling out of my back seat and I’ve got it down. Volunteers?
